Welcome to our family winery

Our Philosophy

origin, authenticity, character, sustainability, craftsmanship

Through generations of knowledge about the terroir, we can perfectly match the vines to the vineyard.
The influence of the weather constantly presents us with new challenges, so we are continuously developing both professionally and personally. This is why the character of the wines differs from vintage to vintage.
We focus on natural soil management and support the health of our vines by promoting biodiversity and sustainability.

History

in the family’s possession since 1764

Our family-run winery is located in the heart of the Wachau region, in the medieval village center of Weißenkirchen. The Zelkingerhof is an old wine estate belonging to the noble family of the same name, whose first documented mention dates back to 1502. Thus, wine has been produced on our estate for over 500 years.
The farm came into our possession in 1764 through the last steward – one of our ancestors – and has been managed by our family for many generations.

Tree Press

a true piece of history

The old wooden wine press, nine meters long and 70 cm in diameter, is not only an integral part of our cozy wine tavern, but also a genuine piece of history. According to scientific studies, it dates back to 1522, making it presumably the oldest wine press in the German-speaking world. We are proud to share this story with our guests and to tell them that we processed our entire wine harvest with this very press until 1996.

Family

our winery is a family affair

Three generations ensure harmony, continuity and change.
Martin has been running the winery since 2015 with the right sense of calm and composure. Grandpa Heinrich always has a good tip at hand, drawn from years of experience—but most of all, he and Grandma Erna love dedicating themselves to vineyard work with great devotion. With Max and Helene—who have been growing into the winemaking life from an early age and bring fresh ideas and knowledge—the mix is complete.

About our wines

“Everyone has a Grüner Veltliner and a Muskateller in their cellar,” says an old Wachau song.
We produce distinctive wines from the diverse vineyards of the Wachau region.

Ried Achleiten

The Achleiten vineyard site is one of the best-known sites in the Wachau.

The Achleiten vineyard site is one of the best-known sites in the Wachau. As imposing as its appearance is, the wines vinified here are just as impressive. Stony, mineral-rich weathered soils of paragneiss and migmatite–amphibolite with only a thin layer of humus define the site. The complexity of the wines is further shaped by vines over 60 years old, cool downslope winds from the Waldviertel, and pronounced day–night temperature swings.

Ried Vorderseiber

Ried Vorderseiber

Vorderseiber refers to the lower, front part of the large Seiberer, whose impressive stone terraces shape the landscape around Weißenkirchen.

The topsoil layer of the profile shows a mineral–humus horizon about 20 cm thick, lying directly above weathered slope debris material. The light-colored stones are fracture surfaces of large feldspars. The reddish-brown coatings are iron oxides formed during weathering. Below lies the crumbled paragneiss, with inclusions of hornblende gneiss and dark amphibolite. Young and very old vines complement each other perfectly in the wine, creating a fruity, fresh Veltliner Federspiel.

The topsoil, with a humus layer about 20 cm thick, is free of lime, while in the subsoil stones and fissures are coated with calcareous material.

Wachau and its crafts

100% handwork

For generations, our family has tended our vineyards with the utmost care and hands-on craftsmanship. Manual selection ensures the highest-quality grapes—the foundation of our village and single-vineyard wines. Thanks to this careful hand selection, only the best grapes are guaranteed and can be processed into our wines.

Natural wine production, guaranteed origin and strict self-monitoring.
As a member of Vinea Wachau, we are committed to the Codex Wachau – 100% Wachau grapes, hand-harvested and uncompromising quality in Steinfeder, Federspiel and Smaragd.
We winemakers of Vinea Wachau understand winemaking as a craft. Wachau wine is distinctive and reflects its origin.

The three wine styles of the Vinea Wachau – Steinfeder, Federspiel, and Smaragd – indicate whether a wine is light, medium-bodied, or full-bodied. They also provide guidance on the complexity, aging potential, and structure of the wines. All wines are dry and produced without oak flavor according to certified sustainability criteria.
